The device (10) has a spring element arranged relative to a fastening part (14) and to a holding part (15). The holding part is rotated against the fastening part according to a rotation direction with or against a spring force of the spring element. Prestressing force, which is produced due to actual rotation angle between the fastening part and the holding part, of the holding part acts as pressing force on a material to be cut by a downholder (11). A maximum rotation angle is adjusted, and the adjusted angle is fixed by a fixing element (16). An independent claim is also included for a slicing machine for cutting of slices from a material to be cut, such as billet-shaped material to be cut, i.e. food, comprising an engagement device.
