The endoscope (1) has a plane window (5) provided at a distal end of an oblong tubular shaft (4). A proximal end of the shaft joins in a cylindrical housing (2). A tubular sterile sleeve (6) is provided at the distal end and closed by a lateral window (7) that is connected to the plane window. The sleeve surrounds the shaft and is adjusted on the shaft in a longitudinal direction. Pivoted levers (16, 17) engage at the sleeve at one side and at the housing at another side. The sleeve is adjusted in a proximal direction by a helical spring such that the lateral window rests at the plane window.
