The method involves fluidically connecting an inner space (3) of a battery (1) with a refrigerant circuit (6) of the battery by an emergency line (4), where the inner space comprises single cells (2) for fire prevention and/or fire fighting. A refrigerant is temporarily guided from the refrigerant circuit into the inner space. The inner space is fluidically integrated into a refrigerant line system of an air conditioning circuit of a vehicle. A non-combustible liquid or gaseous fluid i.e. carbon dioxide, is selected as the refrigerant of the air conditioning circuit. An independent claim is also included for a device for operation of a fire-endangered battery within an air-conditioned vehicle i.e. motor vehicle.
