The system has a fuel cell arrangement (10) for generating electrical energy, where gas pipelines (3) are provided for transporting operating gases to and from the fuel cell arrangement. A water reservoir (20) is in connection with the gas pipelines, and ensures minimum moisture content of the fuel cell arrangement even in phases in which the system is not operated. The water reservoir exhibits a sufficient filling volume. Water is refilled via a filling inlet of the water reservoir. A filling state of the water reservoir is checked during implementation of maintenance works.
