The device (1) has a detecting unit e.g. potentiometer (20), indirectly connected with an adjustable vehicle component (10) e.g. vehicle external mirror, and detecting a position of the vehicle component. A processing unit (5) produces an adjusting signal such that the detection unit produces a position signal representing lower and upper limits of ohmic range, where the ohmic range adapts to a conversion range of an analog-to-digital converter (7) or the conversion range adapts to the ohmic range. The conversion range is limited by a preset number of quantization stages. The detecting unit is designed as an optical sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an adjustable vehicle component.
