The exhaust gas cleaning device (1) has a collecting device which is arranged in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine. The collecting device is provided for collecting a particulate matter contained in an exhaust gas. An estimating function implements an estimation process for calculating an estimated value of the quantity of the particulate matter. A regeneration function is provided for regenerating the collecting device by combustion of the particulate matter.
