The method involves switching a hot water storage tank (1) into a comfort-operating mode during failure or for supply of available heat from a heat generator e.g. solar collector, to the storage tank, where the storage tank comprises a storage container (2). The storage tank is switched into a normal-operating mode, so that a pre-heating region (4) is unloaded during existence of the available heat at the heat generator based on hot water unloading or cooling. The pre-heating region is made receptive for available low temperature heat at the heat generator. An independent claim is also included for a hot water storage tank comprising a pre-heating region.
