The method involves receiving measured values at a measuring cross section of a road part by detectors (1, 2) of vehicles (F). A parameter value of traffic is determined from the measured values at temporary measuring intervals. An upper threshold value and a lower threshold value assigned to traffic characteristics are preset, and the traffic characteristics are monitored for detecting accident while exceeding the upper threshold value and falling below the lower threshold value. The threshold values are automatically adapted to actual characteristics of the parameter value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a traffic calculator for detecting accidents at a part of a road network comprising a program code for executing an accident detecting method (2) a system for influencing traffic at a part of a read network comprising a detector for receiving measured values.
