The method involves defining a point of value patterns (2, 3) by two values on respective axes of a display (1), and representing the value patterns on the display. A value range for one of the values is defined by scales (4, 5) of the display. The scales are automatically adjusted in such a manner that a minimal value of the value of a section of the value patterns is larger than or equal to a minimal value of the scales, and a maximal value of the value of the section of the value patterns is smaller than or equal to a maximal value of the scales. An independent claim is also included for a device for representing a value pattern on a display of a vehicle.
