The heater has a fuel chamber (16) for receiving a firewood (17), and a combustion chamber (10) that is partially separated from the fuel chamber. Gas emerging during combustion of the firewood is guided into the combustion chamber, such that combustion fire extends into the combustion chamber. The fuel chamber is dimensioned such that the firewood is vertically accommodated in the fuel chamber. An air inlet opening (22) is formed in a lower region of the fuel chamber, such that a controllable combustion zone (23) occurs in a lower region of the firewood during combustion.
