In a method for laser-supported machining of high-strength workpieces (1) using a rotating tool (with geometrically specific cutters (14)) fixed on a drive shaft (6) containing a hole (5) and a laser beam (2) (for heating the workpiece before cutting) passing in bundle(s) through the hole and the tool onto the workpiece, at least one laser beam bundle overlaps the rotational axis of the shaft during entry into the hole. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the process, comprising a rotatable tool (with geometrically specific cutter(s) (14)) on a drive shaft (6) having a hole (5) allowing passage of a laser beam (2) and an optical system for coupling the laser beam bundle(s) into the shaft and guiding the beam onto the appropriate surface of the workpiece (1), the novel feature being that the optical system is arranged so that at least one laser beam bundle overlaps the rotational axis of the shaft during coupling into the hole.
