The propellant gas generating device (2) has a propellant gas pressure vessel (4) for generating propellant gas and a combustion chamber (6) with a burner (8) for burning fuel for generating combustion gas. The combustion chamber is connected with the propellant gas pressure vessel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for generating propellant gas under pressure to perform mechanical operation; (2) an expansion machine for converting energy in propellant gas under pressure; (3) an arrangement for two expansion machines; (4) a method for operating expansion machine; (5) a thermal engine for producing a mechanical movement by a fuel; (6) a method for operating thermal engine; (7) a compressor for compressing a process gas, particularly air; and (8) a steam generator for producing water vapor from water.
