The train (10) has a piston (26) that is guided into a cylindrical work space filled with fluid i.e. engine oil, and divided into two chambers (18, 20). A cam (12) moves a gas exchange valve (34) to a disengaging position under intervention of the piston so that lines (22, 24) are assigned to the respective chambers and the fluid is supplied and discharged through the lines. The work space is formed by an internal cylindrical hollow element (30) that is guided by an external cylindrical hollow element (14). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a valve train.
