The controller has a signal pattern circuit for producing a dimming level information signal with a signal pattern that is associated with a desired ballast dimming level. A transformer has a transformer winding and is coupled with the signal pattern circuit. Two output connections connect the transformer winding in series with an alternating current power line, so that a ballast control signal (20) associated with the dimming level information signal is included in an alternating current supply signal (22).
