The discharge lamp (1) has two pinched ends (6,8) with the electrodes (10,12) through them. An outer tube (26) shrouds the discharge unit (4). A third auxiliary electrode (2) is close to the discharge unit, within the outer tube to form a capacity with an external electrode (44). The third electrode has a ring clip (38) to lie firmly at the inner mantle surface (40) of the outer tube and lie partially around a pinched end.
