The method involves determining value for a delay during deceleration, and recovering a wear condition depending on the determined value. The value for the delay is extracted from a delay signal or computed from a rotational speed signal (n). A value for acceleration (a) is extracted from an acceleration signal or computed from the rotational speed signal. A pressure (D) exerted by a friction lining on a friction partner is considered during recovering the wear condition of the friction lining. An independent claim is also included for a friction brake or friction clutch.
