The method involves detecting an ambient parameter of an obstacle (3) by a sensor device (33), and detecting driving dynamics parameter and driving condition of a vehicle (1). A trigger load is determined for triggering a warning or triggering a full braking for collision avoidance or collision reduction, where the load depends upon the ambient and driving dynamics parameters, and the warning or trigger is indicated by collision of the vehicle with obstacle. The load depends upon a maximum transverse acceleration parameter that depends upon velocity of the vehicle.
