The device (1) has a collecting mechanism (15) arranged below a punching mechanism (2) in order to receive precision documents (8, 8', 8'') falling from the punching mechanism. A glass mechanism (30) is provided to inject cleaning fluids (16, 21) from a nozzle (19) into a drop area of one of the precision documents in order to blow punching residues and particles of the precision document. The control device controls the glass mechanism such that the cleaning fluid is temporally synchronized during dispensing the precision document from the punching mechanism. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating precision documents.
