The invention relates to a diagnostic method for a fieldbus system designed according to the AS-Interface standard with a master module (M) and a number of slave modules with the following steps: - response of a slave module by the master module by means of a telegram addressed for this slave module to diagnostic information about the state - receiving a diagnostic group from a large number of possible diagnosis groups in this slave module, - reading diagnostic information from the addressed diagnostics group, - returning the diagnostics information of this diagnostic group from the slave module to the master module, - selecting the slave module in the addressed slave module Diagnostic group based on the telegram and the current operating state of the slave module.
