The fabric has two laminar knitted fabric layers (1, 2) connected with each other by influenced spacer threads (3) i.e. mono filaments. Sections of the threads interconnecting the knitted fabric layers run freely between the knitted fabric layers without an additional support and form a flexibly compressable intermediate layer (4). Pile-threads (5) i.e. multi-filaments, form pile loops on the basis of one of the knitted fabric layers (1). The pile loops extend over a part of the thickness of the intermediate layer in an uncompressed condition of the fabric and form a reinforcing layer (7). An independent claim is also included for a method for producing spacer fabric.
