Evaporator tubing (20) is mounted on a carrier plate (10). They are welded together using ultrasound, a laser and/or roller seam-welding. The tubing and/or plate are aluminum, copper, steel, an alloy or a combination of these metals. Welding takes place on the side of the plate without tubing. It is carried out at least over sections, forming a continuous or spot-welded seam. The seam comprises one or more spaced strips. Optionally, for each evaporator tube, one, two or more parallel weld seams are provided. The evaporator tubes have straight and curved sections. It is exclusively or predominantly the straight sections which are welded to the plate. After welding, a coating is applied to the evaporator. This is a powder-, cataphoretic- or immersion-painted coating. The evaporator tubing has at least one flattened region where welding with the carrier plate is effected. The attachment is made with inclination to the horizontal, to assist water drainage. Before or after coating, connection is made between the evaporator and the suction- and/or capillary pipes. The carrier plate is a metal sheet, preferably less than 2 mm thick. The evaporator tubing is sinuous in form. The evaporator is used in cooling- or refrigeration appliances, where it hangs freely or is foamed-into place. The placement is either visible to the user, or alternatively the evaporator occupies a duct for air guidance.
