The method involves filling aqueous urea solution in a container, where the container is closed and subjected to low pressure and/or temperature that increases in relation to ambient temperature. A wood to be processed is made to contact the aqueous urea solution, where the aqueous urea solution contains 1-1000 grams of urea per liter of solution. The wood is treated at low pressure and/or temperature over an hour in the aqueous urea solution. Alkaline material e.g. potassium hydroxide, is added to the aqueous urea solution.
