A pressure measurement converter, with a sensor producing a signal indicating a pressure (P) to be measured and an evaluation unit producing a signal-based measurement value, has pressure switch(es) (18-20) producing a switching signal using a membrane (22) exposed to the pressure and having its deflection limited by a buffer (26-29). The signal indicates whether the pressure is above or below a threshold above which the converter is to be recalibrated. A pressure measurment converter has a pressure sensor producing a signal corresponding to a gaseous or liquid pressure (P) to be measured and an evaluation unit for determining and displaying a measurement value based on the signal. The novel feature is that at least one pressure switch (18-20) is provided for producing a switching signal using a membrane (22) exposed to the pressure (P) to be measured. Deflection of the membrane is limited by a buffer (26-29). Using the switching signal, the evaluation unit displays whether the buffer has been reached and thus whether the pressure is above or below a predetermined threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, calibration data are determined and stored, and the converter is recalibrated based on the data. An independent claim is included for a corresponding method for operating the pressure measurement converter.
