The adjuster (3) has a control device (40) comprising a bearing block (41) and attached to a seat rail (13). The control device controls a locking device (16) and a memory device (11) for length adjustment of a vehicle seat and freely pivoting a backrest. The control device releases a fitting of the backrest when reaching a seat length position of the vehicle seat based on a relative movement of the memory device. A spring (50) e.g. screw-type buckling spring, is provided with two ends (50a, 50b), and a latch for indirectly locking one of the ends of the spring.
