System and method for the intelligent administration of back-up ventilation

A method of giving a patient breathing aid is presented. The method includes controlling the administration of a first backup breath by delaying the beginning of the first backup breath, wherein the delay of the beginning of the first backup breath is arranged to enable selection of a suitable backup frequency. Also contemplated in connection with the present approach are systems (10) and a computer-readable medium that provide functionality of the type dictated by this method.
