The device (1) has a scalping chisel (6) arranged at a rotating scalping head (4). The chisel is radially fed via a positioning drive (10). The drive has a separate driven component (17) that rotates with the scalping head. The component engages a positioning gear (19) i.e. rolling contact gear, which rotates with the scalping head, by implementing relative movement of the component in a circumferential direction regarding to the scalping head. The component stands in a rotary drive connection with a positioning drive motor (16).
