The device has a luminous display (1) with an LED arranged at an outer side of a motor vehicle (2), and a controller coupled with a drive system by an electrical connection. A detection unit is coupled with the controller, and detects carbon dioxide emission-free operation of the drive system. A switch device activates the luminous display that is controllable by the controller when the detection unit detects the carbon dioxide emission-free operation of the vehicle. The display is arranged in a rear end (3) of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for displaying an operating mode of a motor vehicle.
