The heat exchanger (3) has an inlet and an outlet for the liquid to be cooled. A bypass (16) is provided to by-pass the heat exchanger. A valve (17) is provided for controlling the liquid flow in the heat exchanger or in the bypass. The valve has a valve seat, a valve disk and a spring that is made of a shape memory material (18). The spring works against the liquid pressure in the inlet.
