The sensor (1) has a rotatable light deflecting unit for deflecting light of a light source i.e. laser, into a protection field (2) to be monitored. A receiver detects the light, which is reflected if necessary or remitted by an object i.e. person, existing in the protection field. Monitoring fields are stored in a memory unit. An evaluation unit evaluates the monitoring fields, where time period of staying of the object in the monitoring fields in the evaluation unit is adjusted. An object detection signal is generated depending on the time period of staying of the object in the fields.
