In accordance with the reflection characteristics discriminated, the processing means (226) processes the predetermined information recorded in the recording medium (100). The reflection characteristics are either first characteristics, in which the reflectivity (as will be called the first reflectivity) of a beam reflected on the recorded area of the recording medium (100) is higher than the reflectivity (as will be called the second reflectivity) of the beam reflected in the unrecorded area of the recording medium (100), or second characteristics, in which the first reflectivity is lower than the second reflectivity.
