The mechanism (3) has an elastic return element i.e. torsion spring (31) whose end (311) defines a fixed point i.e. reference point, relative to a base (12). A connecting rod has a free end connected to an end (312) of the spring and another end integrated in rotation to an axle (D) of a hinge of a backrest (11) relative to the base. The spring exerts force to separate the free end of the rod from the fixed point. The ends of the spring and axle define points i.e. reference and action points, of a triangle whose large side connecting the end (311) to the axle has fixed dimension.
