The apparatus (1) has a support formed of a frame (30) and a lever (40) and supporting a rimmed or semi-rimmed spectacle frame (100) or a spectacle gauge. A main carrier is mounted on the support with degrees of freedom (X, Y) for being mobile in a main plane (P1). A sensor (80) measures the spectacle frame or the spectacle gauge maintained on the support by a mechanical contact. An actuating unit actuates the main carrier along the degrees of freedom, and is constituted by an operating handle (60) connected to the carrier and accessible by a user. An independent claim is also included for a method for reading an outline of a rim of a spectacle frame or a spectacle gauge.
