The method involves estimating mass flow rate of a refrigerant in a compressor (11), and estimating isentropic compression work of the compressor. Rotating speed of the compressor is measured. Power consumed by the compressor is estimated using a specific relation comprising parameters such as compressor displacement rate dependent function, refrigerant mass flow rate, isentropic compression work, characteristic number of the compressor and rotating speed.
