The device has a reference clock, and a programmable logic circuit comprising a counter for counting number of periods between a reference and START event. A sampler (ECH) evaluates time between the event and the beginning of a following period or preceding event. A memory (MEM) stores counter values, sampler values and values of number of transitions, when a transition is detected in the sampler. A calculation unit (CALC) determines a time interval between the event and the reference using the stored values.
