Process of treatment of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, comprises applying a system (1) for treating exhaust gases, comprising a nitrogen oxide (NO x) trap (3) charged with palladium providing a catalyst for oxidation of methane and it includes an alternation of a first mode of operation of the system in which the exhaust gases have excess of oxidizing agent and a second mode of operation of the system in which exhaust gases have excess of reducing agent. Independent claims are included for: (1) data support (5) readable by a computer comprising software means for the implementation of the steps of the treatment; (2) NO xtrap (3) that is designed to be mounted on an operating system of the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, where the trap is charged with palladium; (3) a system (1) for the treatment of the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, comprising a NO xtrap (3), material means (4, 5) and/or software means for implementation of the treatment process; and (4) a motor vehicle comprising the NO xtrap.
