The method involves inserting wedges between a rear boot lid (1) and a rear panel lining (2) for closing the boot lid to place the boot lid in a predetermined reference position with respect to the rear panel lining. A reference element is immobilized on one of the boot lid and the lining for carrying out measurement operation. A distance between the reference element and a boss type plane surface (22) or an internal reinforcement (23) of the lining is measured. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for measuring a gap between a rear boot lid and a rear panel lining of a motor vehicle.
