The line (5) has a particle or hot filter (13) and a particle or local filter (14) parallely mounted in downstream of oxidation catalyst (7). A control unit controls circulation of exhaust gas and selectively sends the gas across one of the filters based on operating parameters of the engine. The unit has an electronic control unit (15) connected to a temperature sensor (8) and a nitrogen dioxide sensor (9). The hot filter has a ceramic or metal insert (21), and the local filter has an insert (25) with organic and/or polymer constituents and fibrous frame plates made of paper, sheet or fabric. An independent claim is also included for a method for filtering soot particles emitted by an internal combustion engine.
