The cylinder (1) has primary and secondary pistons (2, 4) sliding along a sliding axis (3). A return spring (8) is displaced between the pistons along the sliding axis. A detection tube (9) installed between the pistons detects movement, has a generatrix parallel to the sliding axis, of the spring. The primary piston is provided with a setting orifice (10). The detection tube is inserted in the setting orifice. The orifice includes an internal volume (18) having oval profile completing an end (11) of the tube inserted in the orifice. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting a master cylinder.
