The method involves evaluating the constraints to which a power train of a motor vehicle is subjected, where the constraints include the torque against wheels required by a driver. An operating mode among multiple operating modes is selected for satisfaction of the constraints, where the operating modes include a skating mode. Fuel consumption is determined for each selected operating mode to satisfy the constraints. Two engines of the motor vehicle and a transmission system are controlled according to the operating mode presenting minimal fuel consumption. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling a power train of a motor vehicle.
