A method and system for determining an escape manoeuvre for an aircraft when an obstacle is detected during the approach to a runway at landing or take off. The system determines if a conflict exists (18), determines an escape manouevre (22) that will resolve the conflict and generates an output pertaining to the manouevre (26). In determining an escape manouevre, the system may take into account the conflict dynamics, the performance of the aircraft (24) or scheduled performance data. The output may be an aural alert which may direct the pilot to "go round" or announcement of distances to the obstruction. The system may also store airport schematics (12). A graphical display may also be provided showing the position of the aircraft on the airfield in relation to geographic markers and the obstacle. Data links may also be provided to other aircraft and vehicles (20). A conflict may be a runway incursion by other aircraft or vehicles in the protected zone around the runway.
