Lesion extent determination in a CT scan image

A method of identifying the extent of a lesion (figure 15: N) attached to a wall P in a computed tomography scan (CT or CAT scan) image of a lung comprises identifying a junction j1, j2 between the lesion and the wall and performing a fine segmentation to separate the image around the lesion into foreground F and background B, using a threshold based on the local contrast. The foreground region representing the lesion is grown, limited by the junction, to include background points while excluding foreground points not included within the foreground region, to create a mask M. The mask is used to derive a fuzzy connectivity map, from which the extent of the lesion is determined. Also disclosed is a method for determining the junction between a lesion and a wall.
