A letter plate 30 comprises a flap 34 movable between a closed position and an open position and a spring assembly for biasing the flap towards the closed position. The spring assembly comprises a spring and a spring tensioning means (44) which may be in the form of a pin or bar. There is a cavity in the flap for at least partially receiving the spring assembly and a frame for receiving the flap. A first retention means 42 retains a first end of the spring assembly relative to the flap and a second retention means retains a second end of the spring assembly relative to the frame. The first retention means may comprise a hole within the flap for receiving one end of the spring.
