PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is made compact in size and low in cost by not requiring any controlling harness or connector for energy saving control or reducing the number of the harnesses and connectors when performing energy saving control. PSOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a first fax control part 12 for controlling communication with a communication part 14 of a normal mode and a communication part 13 of an energy saving mode in its own apparatus, wherein two power supply modes being the normal mode and the energy saving mode are set; a control part 32 of a controller 31 for controlling its own apparatus as a whole; and a USB cable 21 for connecting the fax control part 12 and the control part 32 of the controller 31, wherein the fax control part 12 determines whether to be a normal mode or an energy saving mode on the basis of a state signal from the USB cable 12, a signal indicating a state of a pull-up power supply here, and switches to either of buses 54 and 53 to the communication part 14 of a normal mode or the communication part 13 for an energy saving mode by using an effective bus switching part 15 on the basis of a determination result.
