PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus where opening property and access property are improved by expanding the width of the inner diameter of the right/left direction, that is the X direction, of a gantry cover surrounding a measurement space, and which has X-direction gradient magnetic field coils (XGCs) composed of X-direction main and shield gradient magnetic field coils (XGCm and XGCs) arranged so as to cross the X-direction by expanding the width of the inner diameter of the X-direction of the gantry cover, an elliptically cylindrical gantry of a horizontal static magnetic field type where degrading of magnetic field occurrence efficiency is suppressed, and an active shield type gradient magnetic field coil apparatus which suits the gantry. PSOLUTION: In the gradient magnetic field coil apparatus (GC), the respective gradient magnetic field coils are arranged in an order of an X-direction main gradient magnetic field coil (XGCm), a Y-direction main gradient magnetic field coil (YGCm), a Z-direction main gradient magnetic field coil (ZGCm), a Z-direction shield gradient magnetic field coil (ZGCs), a Y-direction shield gradient magnetic field coil (YGCs) and an X-direction shield gradient magnetic field coil (XGCs) from the gantry cover toward an outer peripheral direction.
