PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal and a method of controlling the same, attaining multi-functional operation in a limited display space utilizing a general input device, without increase in the number of operations until an object is achieved in a main application utilizing the touch panel.;SOLUTION: In a mail creating screen, when input to a touch panel 5 is distinguished as being a pen input, a function previously assigned to an area on a screen of an application 3 specified by input coordinates is performed, according to the pen input. When the input to the touch panel 5 is distinguished as being a finger input, and also the input start position is substantially the same as the input releasing position, the control for switching between a mail creation screen and a mail browsing screen as a calling source is conducted.
