PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To integrate optical cross connect functions to an optical packet switching device.;SOLUTION: A network manager begins the assignment of an output port to an input port in an optical switching matrix by transmitting a request to a resource management device. The resource management device inquires of a port availability database about the decision of the availability of the requested output port. When the requested output port is available, the resource management device reserves the requested output port. Then the resource management device transmits mapping information as to an optical path between the input port and the reserved output port to an optical switch control device. Then the optical switch control device generates an optical path between the input port and the reserved output port. Finally the optical switch control device informs the resource management device that the optical path is established.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
