PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alignment layer which can impart a preferable molecular alignment state to a liquid crystal layer on the alignment layer, to provide a liquid crystal aligner to form the layer, and to provide a liquid crystal display element having preferable black display characteristics and having the alignment layer.;SOLUTION: The liquid crystal alignment layer has a function of controlling the degree of orientation Δ of a liquid crystal layer on the alignment layer to ≥0.05, wherein the degree of orientation is defined by formula (1). In formula (1), A|| (corresponding to A⊥) represents absorbance attributed to the characteristic group vibration in the liquid crystal layer when IR light having a polarized component parallel to the aligning direction enters the liquid crystal layer, and A⊥ represents absorbance attributed to the characteristic group vibration in the liquid crystal layer when IR light having a polarizing component perpendicular to the aligning direction enters the liquid crystal layer.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
