PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing HTP (Helical Twisting Power) in an optically active compound which is used for a liquid crystal material, and to provide an optically active compound which exhibits a large HTP value, and further to provide a liquid crystal composition having a high upper limit temperature of the liquid crystal after adding of the optically active compound and a liquid crystal display element using it. PSOLUTION: The method for increasing HTP is comprised of substituting the partial structure represented by formula (A) in a compound having a partial structure represented by formula (A) having an asymmetric carbon atom with a partial structure represented by formula (B) (wherein * represents an asymmetric carbon atom, and YSP1/SPrepresents a substituent such as an alkyl group, a halogen or the like), and there is provided the compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein RSP1/SPand RSP2/SPare each an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or the like, ASP1/SP, ASP2/SPand ASP3/SPare each 1,4-phenylene group, 1,4-cyclohexyl group or the like, ZSP1/SP, ZSP2/SP, ESP1/SPand ESP2/SPare each a single bond, -COO-, -CHSB2/SBCHSB2/SB- or the like, m, n, p and q are each 0, 1 or 2).
