The method and the system find application in water-engineering and aquaculture artificial structures, natural waterways, such as open water beds - canals, dams, water intakes, non-pressure tunnels, rivers, etc. The system for realizing the method operates online and is highly precise and efficient. The system consists of several level gauges, which are situated at fixed points in the area under survey and their outlets are connected to a computing block with a display. The level gauges are grouped in two pairs (1-2 and 3-4). The deltaS distances between the two gauges in each pair are equal and invariable. The distances S1 from the gauge (1) to the beginning of the area under survey and the distance S2 from the gauge (4) to the end of the area under survey are greater than the lengths ofattenuation of the transitional water processes in the beginning and the end of the area under survey.
