In the present invention, there is disclosed a method for recovering polyester characterized by combining polyester with an effective amount of an alkaline composition to form a mixture, wherein the amount of alkaline composition added is sufficient to react with a portion of the polyester within the range of 0.25 to 20 percent by weight relative to the reaction involving polyester saponification and heating the obtained mixture to a temperature insufficient to melt the polyester but effective to saponify a portion of the polyester whereby the heating step is performed in an environment which contains not more than 80 ppm of water. The invention also relates to a method for solid-stating polyester particles as well as method of treating the solidified recovered polyester particles.
